Over 30 Years of Engineering Excellence
Concrete Science® is an award-winning engineering firm specializing in the thorough assessment and investigation of concrete and masonry structures. With a multidisciplinary team of experienced materials and structural engineers, we are experts in providing in-depth condition assessments, field and lab testing, and actionable repair recommendations.
Led by a Principal Engineer with over 45 years of experience and a past Chairman of ACI Committee 364, our team is rooted in technical expertise and industry leadership. Our involvement in the publication of ACI 364.1R-19: Guide for Assessment of Concrete Structures before Rehabilitation reflects our commitment to setting industry standards.
Having conducted hundreds of condition assessments, we rely on advanced ASTM-approved non-destructive testing methods, a state-of-the-art petrographic lab, and chemical testing to deliver reliable results.
Concrete Science® has become a trusted one-stop solution for forensic field and lab condition assessments and investigations, offering our clients clarity, confidence, and value in their repair planning.
Condition
evalutation
The condition assessment falls into two categories:
Preliminary Assessment
Detailed Assessment
Our process starts with a preliminary condition assessment, often the first step in determining the need for a detailed condition assessment, investigation, and testing. Our experienced engineers can frequently identify potential causes of distress during the preliminary assessment and provide necessary guidance to our clients.
Common reasons clients request our services include:
Understanding the cause of distress.
A proactive maintenance of a structure.
Need to know what & how to repair.
INVESTIGATION &
Field Testing
ACI 364.1R-19 states, “An investigation should identify the type and extent of conditions affecting the structure’s behavior, performance, or intended function. The investigation should also provide the owner information to assist in assessment of the feasibility of the required or intended rehabilitation”.
At Concrete Science®, we follow ACI 364.1R-19 guidelines to conduct thorough investigations that assess the type and extent of conditions affecting concrete structures. Our team of experienced engineers develops detailed investigation plans, balancing destructive and non-destructive testing methods to ensure comprehensive results.
We use advanced, ASTM-approved techniques like pulse velocity, impact echo, GPR surveys, and more, to evaluate a structure’s condition. With decades of experience, our engineers identify the root causes of deterioration—whether from design flaws, construction issues, or environmental factors—and provide actionable, reliable solutions.
Typical Investigations Include:
Cracking, corrosion, honeycombing, and voids.
Flooring & coating failures.
Fire damage, salt attacks.
Strength, concrete quality, & other construction deficiencies.
Design defects.
Whether you’re addressing immediate concerns or planning long-term maintenance, Concrete Science® delivers reliable assessments tailored to your structure’s needs.

PETROGRAPHY LAB & TESTING
Concrete petrography per ASTM C 856 is the study of concrete using a stereo microscope to analyze its composition, structure, and potential defects. It helps engineers and scientists understand the quality and durability of concrete by examining its mineral components, air voids, cracks, and signs of deterioration.
Petrographic examination can identify issues such as:
Concrete Quality: Helps determine the presence of macro and micro cracking, bleed water channels, depth of delamination planes, presence of reactive aggregates, volumes of cement paste, aggregates, entrained and entrapped air, and estimated water to cement ratio.
Chemical Attacks: Detects reactions like alkali-silica reaction (ASR) or sulfate attack that can weaken concrete.
Aggregate Compatibility: Assesses whether the sand and gravel used in the mix are suitable.
Workmanship and Environmental Effects: Evaluates how curing, finishing, and exposure to elements impact concrete performance.
Typically, petrographic analysis is performed on materials such as aggregates, concrete, mortar, stucco, asphalt, coatings, cementitious overlays & underlayment.
Chemical Testing
Chemical testing of concrete is primarily performed to determine the depth of carbonation and the quantity of water or acid-soluble chloride content in concrete, according to ASTM C1252 and ASTM C1218.
